How to evaluate the privacy of online file tools
Practical questions about transfer, storage, deletion and accounts before uploading.
Look for specific answers
A service should explain why it needs a file, how long it remains available and who can access it. General claims such as “completely secure” are not enough without a deletion policy, contact method and identifiable publisher.
Minimize what you upload
Do not upload a complete document when one page is sufficient. Remove unnecessary identifiers and signatures, and prefer local processing for highly sensitive material when it is available.
Separate files from account data
A working file may be deleted quickly while account details and security logs remain longer. Review sign-in, cookie and deletion choices. Advertising does not require the content of uploaded documents to be used for personalization.
